I like learning new languages. Of course it did help that grew up in a neighborhood where there were at least 4 languages and multiple dialects being spoken. The sad thing was that although I could speak different languages, I could not read or write in those languages. Fortunately, some languages which I was familiar with were taught in school so I jumped at the chance to learn how to read and write in those languages. By 6th grade, I was able to read or Chinese foreign language learning books.

The nice thing about Chinese is that even though Mandarin is the official language, the characters mean the same thing in different dialects. Popular Chinese dialects include Hokkien and Cantonese.

I took up Spanish in high-school and French in college. Not long after I got my first job, I decided I wanted to learn foreign languages which were more exclusive, which is another way of saying ‘not so popular’.
